DeQuervain Tendinopathy

The American Society of Hand Therapists explain DeQuervain Tendinopathy below. The name can feel confusing, but the condition is fairly simple. The tendons that open or extend the thumb travel under a “tunnel” at the wrist toward the base of the thumb. In this condition, the tendons become inflamed and compressed under the tunnel which causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist and up the forearm. The pain is usually caused with pinch, thumb, movements, and wrist movements.

If non-surgical treatment is recommended by your physician, a certified hand therapist can help reduce painful symptoms by creating a custom orthosis and guiding you in a specific set of exercises and activities to restore the motion and strength in your thumb and wrist. If a surgical approach is required, hand therapy is often recommended following surgery.
